The annual WA State testing window for grades 3-12 runs from mid-March to early June. Each District sets their own testing dates within this time-frame. Many tests are conducted online, though others are paper-pencil.
Wahkiakum School District is using the new Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) for Math and English/Language Arts in grades 3-8 and grade 11, while continuing to use the Measure of Student Progress (MSP) in Science for grades 5 and 8.

Washington State 2018 Healthy Youth Survey: October 2018
Our district participated in the Washington State 2018 Healthy Youth Survey The Healthy Youth survey includes questions related to physical activity and diet, unintentional and intentional injury, substance use, risk and protective factors, access to school-based services, and sexual behaviors, abuse and orientation. Survey results are used by schools, communities and state agencies to plan programs to support our youth and reduce their risks.
Please read the Healthy Youth Survey (HYS) 2018 Parent and Student Notification Letter for more information about the Healthy Youth Survey. In 2016, the Healthy Youth Survey was given to Wahkiakum District students in grades 6 - 12. Participation in the survey is voluntary and the students' answers are anonymous. Annual Parent Notice/Opt-Out of HIV/AIDS Curriculum for Grades 6-12:
Presented May/June Each Year
During late May/early June of each school year, the Wahkiakum School District Nurse presents the HIV/AIDS Curriculum to students in Grades 6-12. For more detailed information about this curriculum, please read this letter about the HIV/AIDS curriculum.
If you do NOT wish to have your child participate in this HIV/AIDS unit, please complete and turn in the bottom portion of this letter to the school office by early May of each school year.
Late Start on Thursdays at 9:30 am for Teacher Collaboration: K-12
What is the schedule for "Late Start Thursdays" and how will this benefit our students?
The Wahkiakum School District is committed to improving student achievement. One effective strategy for improvement is providing time for teachers to work together in small groups or Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). For the 2019-2020 school year, Late Start Thursdays began on September 12th.
Students in ALL Grades K-12 will start school one hour late at 9:30 am on Thursdays (doors open at 9:00 am instead of 8:00 am), giving teachers 60 minutes each week to collaborate.
This extra hour will allow teachers to work together to:
- Study and share effective teaching strategies
- Examine students' testing data and set goals for improved learning
- Align curriculum with the new common core standards for each course and grade level
- Analyze student work
- Create common assessments or tests
- Identify students who require additional support to meet standards or advanced instruction to move beyond standards
On Thursdays, buses will pick up All students one hour later and K-8 doors will open at 9:05 am and HS doors will open at 9:00 am. Breakfast will be served and ALL Wahkiakum students will still attend all classes within a shortened school day. This includes the Kindergarten, which is on a full-day schedule.
The goal is to improve student learning through PLCs. We are committed to working together with parents and students to enhance the learning of all students.
